2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the announced projects smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
