The White House confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
