South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Visits Oregon Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility Amid Right-Wing Figures

Kristi Noem, currently serving as the head of the Department of Homeland Security, visited the federal immigration enforcement facility in Portland on Tuesday. On site, she saw firsthand a modest demonstration outside, which differs significantly to the dramatic "encirclement" described by Donald Trump.

Escorted by MAGA Personalities

Noem was accompanied by a set of right-wing figures who were transported from the local airport to the site in her security detail. Her department has published increasingly belligerent online posts showing federal personnel conducting enforcement operations and deploying tear gas at crowds.

Protest Scene

Portland police established a perimeter outside the facility in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the Noem's arrival. A handful protesters, including one in the outfit of a fowl and another as a shark, were held back.

A song blared from a gathering spot nearby, with lyrics mentioning Donald Trump and allegations. Someone yelled to a federal recorder filming from the facility's roof, asking whether the Department of Homeland Security had been referred to as the "information ministry".

Reporting Details

Reporters from independent publications were also held behind the barrier outside, while the conservative personalities in her party—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—shared social media updates of the Noem participating in federal officers in religious observance inside, offering a motivational speech, and telling a member of the Oregon National Guard to "Get ready".

Recent Rulings

Governor Noem has supported the former president's allegations that the group of protesters—who have gathered in their dozens outside the office since June, including one in an frog outfit—are "terrorists" who have placed the facility "besieged", making the sending of federal troops essential.

Yet, on Saturday, a U.S. judge in Portland blocked his effort to federalize the state's guard, determining that the Trump's claims that the generally nonviolent city was "burning to the ground" were "not based on reality".

The next day, the judge, Karin Immergut—who was appointed to the bench by Donald Trump—expanded her order to prevent guard members from any jurisdiction from being sent in Portland. She acted after he answered to her first order by trying to deploy members of the California National Guard to the state.

Increased Confrontations

Following Donald Trump highlighted the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the office and made false claims that Oregon is "battle-scarred", a growing number of his followers, including conservative personalities, have arrived to confront the individuals.

Some of these encounters have caused fights and brawls, resulting in detentions by the officers. Nick Sortor was taken into custody after he tried to force his way a gathering on a walkway near the office and was involved in a scuffle over an U.S. flag. He had before seized the banner from a demonstrator who was burning it.

Criminal counts against the influencer were later dropped after an backlash in right-wing outlets prompted the chief of the legal unit of the DOJ, a department official, to threaten an investigation of the Portland Police Bureau over alleged anti-conservative bias.

The two women Sortor was arrested for fighting with still face charges.

Government Statements

Over the weekend, Governor Tina Kotek, the governor, alleged federal officers in the site of trying to provoke the protesters by using excessive quantities of chemical irritants in a populated area and bringing in right-wing personalities to document the gathering from the roof of the facility. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," the governor stated.

Several of those MAGA-aligned figures were described in a law enforcement document last month as "anti-protest individuals" who "constantly return and harass the protesters until they are assaulted or exposed to irritants" and resist "repeated advice from police to stay away from" the demonstrators.

Influencer Activities

A conservative personality, a former journalist who transitioned as a Christian nationalist influencer after being fired from a media outlet for plagiarism, shared video of the secretary viewing from the roof of the office at the limited number of individuals below, including an individual who wears a chicken costume to ridicule the former president. He labeled the video of Noem viewing the placid scene below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

In spite of the disconnect between the claims from both officials that this facility is "besieged" from "domestic terrorists" and visible proof of a small number of individuals in non-threatening attire, the figures with the secretary continued to label the group as threatening extremists.

Official Engagement

While in Portland, Noem also held a discussion with the law enforcement head, the chief, who has been caricatured as "woke" in right-wing outlets for authorizing his personnel to apprehend Nick Sortor. In a social media update on the meeting, Johnson claimed that the official had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then drove out the office past a handful of demonstrators on the nearby road, including one dressed as a animal wearing a hat.
